Анотація
У статті розглянуто проблему відтворення культурно маркованої
лексики в англомовному перекладі повісті Марка Вовчка «Інститутка»,
автором якого є Олесь Коваленко. З’ясовано, що найчастіше перекладач застосовує приблизний переклад, а саме: функціональні аналоги (метод уподібнення / субституції), родо-видову заміну (гіперонімічне перейменування /
генералізацію) та опис (пояснення, тлумачення) / дескриптивну перифразу.
Також Олесь Коваленко досить вдало використовує ситуативні відповідники
(контекстуальну заміну). Various aspects of material and spiritual life of a nation are reflected in the
lexical items that can be unique to a particular language. Words and phrases encoding
cultural information pose a challenge for translators of fiction as they always
have to choose between preserving the national colouring (connotations) of this type
of lexis and making it comprehensible to the readers in the target language. Although
the problem of finding the most adequate ways to convey the meaning of culturally
marked vocabulary has often been discussed in translation studies, there are still
many debatable issues, which need a thorough analysis. Thus, the topicality of our
study is determined by the necessity of further research in this field that will give us
an opportunity to see the main tendencies in the sphere of translating Ukrainian literary
classics and contemporary fiction into English.
The aim of our study is to identify the main ways of conveying the meaning
of culturally marked vocabulary in the English translation of the novella «Instytutka»
by Marko Vovchok. Our tasks are as follows: to validate the usage of the term ‘culturally
marked vocabulary’ in translation studies; to describe the ways of conveying
the meaning of the vocabulary with a national and cultural component in the English
translation of Marko Vovchok’s novella «Instytutka»; to determine whether the employment
of certain translation strategies is justified in particular contexts. The analysis of the text and its translation done by Oles Kovalenko shows that
different ways of conveying the meaning of culture-specific vocabulary are applied,
namely: functional analogues (adaptation / substitution), hyperonymic renaming
(generalization), and description (explication). Also, the translator quite adequately
employs situation (contextual) equivalents.
Though the cultural connotations are not often preserved in the English version
of the novella in question, the choice of translation strategy and the following transformations
is mostly justified. Oles Kovalenko does not overload the English text with
incomprehensible calques or transliterated terms and their explanations in the notes
that makes the novella quite understandable and easy to read.
