The study presents a historical overview of the existence of national artistic thinking in the light of the tendencies of romanticism as a worldview and type of artistic thinking, considering the compensatory nature of artistic activity in relation to existential and production principles of such activity. The scientifi c novelty of the study is to justify the importance of the romantic worldview features for the Ukrainian national idea, starting with the “lyricism of the soul” in the formulation of sociologists of the Canadian diaspora, as the romantic worldview naturally “erases the opposites” and removes the full expression of the artistic aspect of romanticism as an embodiment of the ideals and reality antinomies. These generalizations of theoretical and practical-active nature fi ll the idea of performance – with categorical meaning, and moreover, claim, along with the musical and symphonic meaning, according to B. Asafyev, for the position of the “musical universal category”. The etymology of the word performance, which is related to the “interpretation” defi ned in the actual context as the opposite of the fi rst, according to V. Medushevsky’s conclusions, points to the high mission of the “complement to artistic integrity”, being similar to the “prophecy” of the Latin interpretation. The above approach is implied in the position of G. Adler, who pointed out that “history is made by the ordinary musicians”, that is, the creative genius- professionals are corrected by the fi eld of popular art, which meets the needs of the widest public. The comprehension of music as a phenomenon of culture raised the theory of performance to a new stage of generalizations, rejecting the traditional academic version of the indisputable primacy of composing work and tolerant attitude to the “crowd of listeners”, which brought forward the hierarchy of “decline in quality” – from the height of composer’s discovery to populism of “common people”. But it was romanticism that advocated an alternative to these ideas: glorifying the signifi cance of the genius, a national index was put as an attribute of their chosenness, that is, fi tting the broadest circles of the nation in the musical use. The romantic antinomy of understanding the essence of the conditions of artistic discovery was directly captured by Ukrainian salon piano art, which, according to P. Sokalsky, confronted the musical existence of the nation with the very tangibility of piano instrumentalism and at the same time embodied the attributes of folk musical thinking in the expressiveness. The generalization of information about the development of romanticism in its “narrow” meaning as the historical style-movement and in the expansive interpretation as a kind of methodology of non-classic type of creativity allows us to draw some conclusions. First, romanticism as a historically complex concept of artistic thinking relied on the “reconstruction” of baroque mindsets in the context of “post-classical” art of the early 19 th century, including within the aesthetics of the “great in small” of the German Biedermeier and its analogues in other national cultures. And this applies to Ukrainian and Russian cultures, which at that time had fundamental intersections. These “neo-baroque” tendencies of romanticism gained special prominence in neo-baroque lines as such in the art of the past century and in the post-avant-garde mindsets of the late 20 th – early 21 st centuries, eliminating the aggressive anti-romanticism of the modern-avant-garde of the past century. Second, the romanticism that accompanied the basic mindsets of the national composing schools that were born or rebuilt, as it was in Ukraine in the fi eld of secular art, proved to be a methodologically nourishing environment for the respective national school-tradition. The latter was genetically obliged to the above mentioned stylistic romantic principles in developing a strategy for its creative promotion in the cultural space of existence of different nations and countries – outside the movement of romantic art as such and especially fruitfully in the time of “anti-romanticism” of the past 20 th century. Third, performance as a relatively independent fi eld of composing creativity, which historically preceded the professionalism of composing activities, in a large number of national cultures of the 20 th century, showed an adherence to the antinomy of the romantic principles of playing the “light” and orchestral “grand” pianos, sometimes against the anti-romantic mindsets in the composing work that represented the same national indicators in art and music. Fourth, the romantic component, as a stylistic foundation, defi nes the general lines of existence of Ukrainian art in the 20 th century and has largely fertilized the performing basis of Ukrainian musicians. In the fi eld of piano music, the romantic academic tendency formed a stable extension into the practice and theory of music, guided by the aesthetic criteria and ideological preferences of the Soviet era in support of academicism, and coincided with the religious background of the Ukrainians who preserved in the past cultural memory and still preserve the feeling of pride for the Orthodox Enlightenment, in which, with the reforms of Petro Mohyla, they were established in the Eastern Slavic world as the leaders of this kind of cultural and religious movement that established the environment of the Orthodox Ukrainian szlachta as represented by the descendants Oleksiy Rozum and other descendants of Russian throne, etc. The result of the above review and its following generalizations is the idea of materiality of the romantic worldview in the representatives of the Ukrainian mentality, beginning with the “lyricism of the soul” as a social phenomenon which eliminates the rational-differentiating approach in the national expression, and ending with the artistic preferences, among which the lyric genres of the song fi lling occupy dominant positions. The national idea, as it was formed from the modern age to the present, goes beyond the rationalistic-antinomic (“irrationalistic” according to A. Schopenhauer!) mindsets of romantic comparisons in art as those that could not be realized in fullness of expression in Ukrainian art, but imbued with romantic motifs the Biedermeier-realistic, proto-symbolist tendencies in the 19 th century and modernist-postmodern tendencies in the 20 th – 21 st centuries.uk_UA.UTF-8
