The thesis is aimed at the solution of the problem of developing future teachers’ phonetic competence in English as the second foreign language after German. The first part of the study explores the theoretical grounds of developing professional phonetic competence in the second foreign language. Within the structure of the professional phonetic competence in English as the second foreign language after German the following components are distinguished: linguistic, methodological, pragmatic, and reflexive. These components are based on the professional phonetic competence in the first foreign language as well as the professional phonetic knowledge, professional phonetic skills, phonetic methodological skills and professional phonetic awareness which are specific for the professional phonetic competence in English after German. It is established that future teachers’ acquisition of English pronunciation takes place in a subordinate multilingualism environment. As a result, future teachers create their own interlanguage phonetic system. The major processes that influence the development of this system are language transfer from the native and the German language, intralanguage interference as well as students’ following universal pronunciation principles and overgeneralizing English pronunciation rules. Thus, it is suggested that taking into account future teachers’ phonetic knowledge and sub-skills acquired while learning the native and the first foreign language might contribute to amending the structure of their interlanguage phonetic system. Within the linguistic basis of the process of developing the professional phonetic competence in English after German the author distinguishes four components according to the nature of the constituents of language phonic structure: 1) the sound component; 2) the syllable component; 3) the accentuation component; 4) the intonation component. The second part of the thesis presents the methods of developing future teachers’ phonetic competence in English after German devised by the author. It commences with specifying the principles of teaching future teachers the second foreign language pronunciation. The principles are subdivided into three groups: 1) principles whose realization is identical in the process of developing professional phonetic competence in English as the first and the second foreign language; 2) principles whose realization is modified in the process of developing professional phonetic competence in English as the second foreign language; 3) principles specific for the process of developing the second foreign language professional phonetic competence. In order to define the optimal order of introducing phonetic units in the process of teaching future teachers English pronunciation after German English consonants and monophthongs are classified according to the criterion of the difference of their relevant features from the corresponding characteristics of the native and German sounds, which provides an opportunity to arrange them following the principle of increasing difficulties: from those whose relevant features coincide with the characteristics of the corresponding sounds of the other languages to the ones whose pronunciation can be affected by the negative transfer from both the native and the German language. The types of activities which can be used while teaching pronunciation to future teachers are systematized according to the general criteria. However, taking into consideration the requirements for the subsystem of activities for developing the second foreign language professional phonetic competence the author singles out additional types of activities according to the following specific criteria: the number of aims, professional orientation, reflection/self-analysis availability, the nature of language material. According to the stages of developing professional phonetic competence in the second foreign language the created subsystem includes four groups of activities: 1) for introducing the new phonetic units followed by analyzing their characteristics in comparison with German and the native language; 2) for developing phonetic sub-skills at the pre-text stage drawing on German and/or the native language; 3) for developing phonetic sub-skills at the mini-text/text stage drawing on German and/or the native language; 4) for developing professional skills taking into account German and/or the native language. The model of the professionally oriented development of future teachers’ phonetic competence in English after German suggested in the thesis consists of a theoretical-practical cycle aimed at introducing students to the main components of English phonic structure with their further use in speech and a practical cycle aimed at further development of the subskills of using separate phonetic units. To prove the effectiveness of the subsystem of activities and the model a pedagogical experiment has been conducted. Its conditions and results are presented in the third part of the thesis. The only variable factor of the experiment is variants of methods. Variant A, used in experimental groups 1 and 3, presupposes taking into consideration students’ experience in learning both the native and the first foreign language. Variant B, applied in groups 2 and 4, is different from Variant A in exclusive drawing on future teachers’ native language. Both variants of methods are based on the elaborated cyclic model. The results of the experiment prove the effectiveness of both variants of methods. However, the received data indicate that the average increase in the development of the professional phonetic competence in experimental groups 1 and 3 is 8% higher than the one in groups 2 and 4, which substantiates the necessity of drawing on students’ experience in learning German and the expediency of implementing Variant A of the methods in the teaching process. Methodological recommendations for using the model and the subsystem of activities by all teachers including those who do not speak German have been developed.
